I made this painting in a friend’s garden in Glens on the Dingle Peninsula in Kerry. It started with the very intricate ink drawing of the Crann Draíochta or magic tree. I was very taken by the suaimhneas of the garden, the animals, and the land here. I loved the grey area between wild and domesticated. This is the ladder in the tree and the Rhododendron amongst the brambles a feeling that I can relate to very much. There was magic in the air that eve and a lunar eclipse. There was no Spring this year. It just went from Winter and exploded into Summer. I think we all needed that. I created two suns for the craic. Everything felt upside down. I was looking over at Cruach Mhárthain and Brandon from an angle that I am not used to, so it felt like waking up back to front and upside down, like an alternate universe. I put in two of each hill and really enjoyed sketching the details in the Mám. The sióg vibes were strong. This feels like a beautiful breakthrough for me after a few very tricky months before it. I am finally set free, and this is a beautiful dreamscape. Applying the chalk plaster and gesso to this gave it a feeling quite like porcelain. I used domestic items such as breadboards and tea to bring it all back home. May it bring you joy and a sense of fun. I so enjoyed every minute of making it.
